That's NO GOOD
Hello, dear friends. I have decided that I can no longer stand by and watch deviantART's servers be flooded by images that are not art. Art requires effort in both conception and execution, and if you are not willing to put a sufficient investment into your submissions, then I reserve the right to my opinion: your image is not art.
Deviations will be added to the No Good collection if I think they are not art.
I hope to raise awareness of what it takes to produce images that are art, to help rid this site of at least some of the massive amounts of clutter that currently occupy thousands of megabytes of space across multiple servers, and to help raise the overall level of quality of work being submitted. People need to be aware that deviantART is not the same as MySpace, Facebook, Photobucket, Flickr, and other image-hosting or general photo-sharing sites. DeviantART is for ART.
In general, I only select one particularly bad piece from an offender's gallery to add to my No Good collection. One piece should be enough to convey the intended message.
Quality Artwork
Deviations will be faved and added to the Quality Artwork collection if I like them and feel they are worthy of showcasing.
The pieces in this collection are not necessarily the sum of the best art on the internet. The only correlation between my Quality Artwork collection and the No Good collection is that one contains pieces that exhibit effort while the other does not.
Constructive Criticism
I will try my best to leave comments with constructive criticism on all pieces that I fav or add to a collection. I always read the artist's comments thoroughly before leaving a critique.
Please keep in mind that constructive criticism does not equate to lavishing praise when it is unwarranted. If I feel that your work deserves no praise, it shall receive none. This site has been tainted by not only the endless torrents of non-art images, but also the complete lack of serious criticism. An artist should be prepared for critique when uploading to this site. Ask yourself, would an art professor tear this apart? Will my feelings be hurt if that is the case? If your answer to both of these questions is "yes", then you should practise more before posting to this site as well.
That is not to say I condone flaming. I will never post a comment that sounds like this: "u suck and you will nevar be good at art so don't post your ugly crap here u retard". Flaming is an attack on a person. I only aim to provide feedback on a particular piece. Comments should never be a form of personal attack.
If you feel that I have not given you constructive criticism, state this when replying to my comments and I will try to provide you with more useful feedback. Again, this will not necessarily include praise if none is warranted.
I believe that anyone can become a great artist if they just invest the time and effort needed to achieve greatness. Another important element of this is learning how to gracefully accept critique.
My Art
I am always trying to improve my art, so I appreciate any critique you can leave on my pieces.
If you will not accept my comments because you believe that my level of artistic skill is not high enough to allow me the authority to hand out critique, I ask you simply to refer to the following quote: "It doesn't take a chef to know that the soup is too salty." In other words, I have functional eyes. It doesn't take a world-class artist to see that a poorly-made image is poorly made. How popular or prolific I am also has no bearing on my ability to provide valid critique.
Scraps
I never add pieces in Scraps to my No Good gallery. Scraps is an acceptable place to put garbage. Anything that is currently in my No Good collection that is also in Scraps was moved there after the fact by the artist.
Removal From My Collections
It is against my policy to remove any pieces from my No Good collection. If you do not wish to see your work in my collection, you should delete it. Then it will no longer be in my collection.
If you object to your art being placed in my Quality Artwork collection, please let me know.
Critique Requests
I will try my best to oblige all critique requests. Simply leave a comment or send a note asking me to critique a specific piece, and I will do my best to provide an honest and helpful critique. Since I am very busy in my life outside the internet, I cannot always guarantee that my response will come in a prompt manner.
"No Good" Suggestions
Please do not suggest pieces for me to add to my No Good collection on my user page, journal, or in the collection itself. These requests will be ignored.
